Feeling pain because of your arthritis? Do you have swollen, inflamed joints? Tired of unsightly and throbbing cracked heels?
Pain relief is part of pain management, a branch of medicine also called algiatry. This branch of medicine is all about easing physical pain and mental trauma. In addition, pain relief is also about promoting healing and supporting the patient throughout the whole of the recuperation process. Pain management practitioners can be pharmacists, psychologists, physiotherapists, and therapists.
What is pain relief?
Pain relief is part of pain management, a branch of medicine also called algiatry. This branch of medicine is all about easing physical pain and mental trauma. In addition, pain relief is also about promoting healing and supporting the patient throughout the whole of the recuperation process. Pain management practitioners can be pharmacists, psychologists, physiotherapists, and therapists.
There are two approaches to pain relief: the first approach is the physical approach. The physical approach is about physical medicine and rehabilitation, and it utilizes techniques like acupuncture, therapeutic exercises, electrotherapy, and light therapy. The second approach is the psychological approach. The psychological approach, on the other hand, utilizes techniques like cognitive behavioural therapy, hypnosis, and meditation.
The World Health Organization has organized a pain ladder that ranks pain type along with initial drug treatment. The lowest pain type is that of a headache, and the highest is that of fibromyalgia. A less specific way of ranking pain is by categorizing them into: (1) mild pain, (2) mild to moderate pain, and (3) moderate to severe pain.
What are the drugs used for relieving pain?
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs, which include acetaminophens and paracetamols, are administered for mild pain types like headaches, migraines, and menstrual cramps. Antidepressants and antiepilectic drugs are used for managing chronic pain. Another drug used for pain management are opioids. All of these are analgesics, which are drugs that are more commonly known as painkillers. Analgesics can come in different forms like tablets and capsules which can be ingested, and gels and ointments which can be topically applied to the skin. Analgesics can also be lotions or sprays. These products can be bought over the counter even without prescription.
