What is Brewer’s yeast?Brewer’s yeast is made from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which is a single celled fungus grown specifically as an ingredient in nutritional supplements. Brewer’s yeast is used in baking bread, but it is also a by-product of producing beer and making wine. When in its flaked or powdered form, it has an almost cheesy flavour. It has a bitter taste, which is usually removed by the brewing process used by companies. This bitter taste is caused by the yeast absorbing nutrients, thereby absorbing even the bitter flavours of these nutrients. Thiamine is a vitamin necessary for the brain to function properly. Niacin, another vitamin, can improve cholesterol levels and chromium can lower insulin levels and fasting blood sugar. Vitamin B12, or cobalamin, is vital for forming blood cells and maintaining the health of the nervous system.

The other benefits of brewer’s yeast are as follows. Brewer’s yeast can provide the body with better protection against heart disease. This is because brewer’s yeast encourages the production of good cholesterol, high density lipoprotein, and lower the levels of bad cholesterol, low density lipoprotein.

Brewer’s yeast may be dangerous to people with severe pancreatitis and other serious illnesses. People suffering gouts or candida infections should not take brewer’s yeast. Brewer’s yeast tablets can cause stomach upsets, gas, and bloating.
