It may come as no surprise to you the many CoQ10 supplements and vitamins available on market shelves. You may have thought, what is CoQ10? What are the benefits of having the two forms of Coenzyme Q10, ubiquinol and ubiquinone? Let us find out more about this specific nutrient.
“CoQ10 is an extremely powerful antioxidant that offers amazing benefits for just about everyone. It has virtually endless applications and qualities. It has anti-aging properties, increases energy and can lead to improved cardiovascular and cellular health. In fact, maintaining high CoQ10 levels is so critical, It is particularly recommended to those who are over 40, battling fatigue or dealing with cardiovascular issues. For the over 40 set, starting with 200-400 mg daily for the first four weeks, and then 200 mg a day to maintain healthy levels. If you take statins – the cholesterol lowering drugs – then CoQ10 levels are even more important, as statins can slash them by as much as 40%, leaving you vulnerable to all sorts of problems, especially muscle pains. If you must take a statin, CoQ10 supplementation is an absolute, health-saving must.”
Coenzyme Q10 Information
Coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10 for short, is a powerful antioxidant responsible for providing the body with protection from free radical damage. This increases the body’s natural immunity and boosts our resistance to infections. Plus, it aids in the formation of Adenosine Triposphate (ATP), the cells’ energy currency. Unfortunately, the body is capable of producing only a small amount of CoQ10 and even lower in times of ailments, declining age and stress. This is when CoQ10 supplementation becomes beneficial.
There are various forms of CoQ10 supplements, namely soft gel capsules, hard shell capsules, liquid formula, pills or tablets. The most frequently taken is the fat soluble capsule with 30 to 200mg dosage. In addition, CoQ10 dietary sources include whole grains, fish and meats. In fact, 3 ounce of chicken or beef meat contains 2.6mg of the nutrient. For this reason, CoQ10 supplements are helpful in raising the body’s stores of the said antioxidant.
Coenzyme Q10 Benefits
Coenzyme Q10 supports the natural defences of the body against free radicals. These free radicals are unpaired ions which bind to molecules of the body, rendering them useless and inactive. Excessive free radical formation can lead to the development of disease, or even cancer. CoQ10 combats these free radicals by neutralizing them.
Research studies also link the use of CoQ10 with improved heart health, normal blood pressure levels, prevention of cancer and the management of diabetes and hypertension. It may also improve male fertility and soothe swelling in the gums, legs or lungs.
CoQ10 Forms – Ubiquinone versus Ubiquinol
You might have noticed in supplement labels the two forms of CoQ10, ubiquinone and ubiquinol. What is different between these two? Their chemical makeup, that’s what. The chemistry behind these two forms makes them unique from each other. Still, they both have health benefits.
The names of these two are derived from ‘ubiquitous’ and ‘quinone.’ Quinone refers to organic compounds with two carbonyl groups in their structure. Ubiquinone must undergo conversion to ubiquinol before it can be truly be effective. Hence, ubiquinol is the reduced form of the compound. For this reason, ubiquinone is best taken by those still in their 20s or 30s while ubiquinol is recommended for those in their late 40s since it is more soluble and quick acting. Regardless, both forms boast of effectiveness in promoting good health.
