Dandruff is a medical condition in which a person has a dry scalp. Dandruff the word itself is the shedding of dead, dry skin cells from the scalp. It is a common medical condition that affects a large portion of the population. Those with dandruff tend to have a dry, flaky scalp with frequent shedding of dead skin cells.

Normally, skin flaking is normal, but is usually unseen by the human eye. However, people with dandruff flake larger clumps of skin, which are normally oily and greyish-white in color. Dandruff may also have an effect on a person’s self-esteem or confidence, as the constant flaking of the scalp, which can be visible in the hair and on clothes, can also be a source of stress and insecurity.

This skin condition can be caused by a variety of factors, which may include a predisposition to other skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis or even just having dry skin and shampooing too often.

There are a variety of treatments for dandruff and the subsequent flaky skin. Most treatments for dandruff are topical in nature, usually in the form of shampoos, conditioners, and hair oils. These hair products may be nourishing in nature, working to moisturize and sooth the scalp to alleviate dry skin. Hair oils like oregano oil in particular have been shown to help moisturize and help treat dandruff. Other products may contain ingredients that are used to control the production of skin, as those with dandruff tend to have faster skin production. Sometimes, dandruff may be just due to an irritation to the scalp, which may be solved just by using special formulas of shampoo and conditioner that are mild and are free from irritants common to cause dandruff.
